Canada defeated the USA 2:0 in a sensational qualifying match. This means that this relatively non-football country is still in first place in the CONCACAF qualifying group. Another victory could mean Canada’s participation in the World Cup in Qatar is already assured.

When you say Canada, most people think of hockey rather than football. But that could change now. Canada’s national team is now well on its way to a historic second World Cup appearance.

On Sunday, they came significantly closer to advancing when they beat their great rival, the USA. Canada took the lead in the seventh minute when Cyle Larkin opened the scoring. Left back Samuel Adekugbe was able to score late in the game.

The Maple Leaf country’s only appearance at the World Cup was less than stellar. In 1986, Canada found itself in a group with France, Hungary and the Soviet Union. They lost all their games, not even scoring a goal.

However, this is a reputation Canada will most likely have a chance to repair soon. Canada is currently in the first of three promotion spots. There are only 4 games left in the qualifying cycle.

The Canadian team currently includes names well known to Czech football fans such as Alphonso Davies or Jonathan David.

The successful qualification campaign is also undoubtedly behind the English coach of Team Canada, John Herdman. He has instilled a clear system in the team, as evidenced by only 5 goals conceded in 10 qualifying matches.

“We feel like we’re in football land. When we get off the bus, we immediately feel the cheers from the fans. They were like another player on the pitch during the game. It’s all about the collective spirit. We never stop fighting, we have a whole football nation behind us,” praised team coach John Herdman in an interview with the Canadian Football Association.

Canada will play its next game in the World Cup qualifiers in Qatar against El Salvador. In this duel they will be the undoubted favourites.
