Real Madrid is in a difficult situation. Their gap to the Spanish league leaders has widened to eight points. In addition, the royal club has to contend with a large squad that has added another building block to the roster.

Real Madrid took on Mallorca in Sunday’s round of the Spanish top flight. The match was preceded by another blow when the club’s number one goalkeeper, Thibaut Courtois, was injured, so he was replaced in goal by Andriy Lunin.

The players of the reigning champion did not manage to win the match and their loss to the leading Barcelona increased to eight points.

Courtois is another of a number of footballers who have joined the club’s sick list. Already in the match against Valencia, Karim Benzema and Éder Milato were injured and will not be able to take part in the upcoming Club World Cup.

A large number of players are out of the squad

Real Madrid have been struggling with a large number of injured players lately. Only now have Dani Carvajal, David Alaba and Aurélien Tchouaméni returned to the game. Lucas Vazquez and Eden Hazard are still on the injured list, joined by three more players from the starting line-up.

Thus, the Italian coach had to call up several players from the reserve squad for the upcoming Club World Cup. The White Ballet entered this season with the vision of a very busy schedule, which is currently taking its toll.

Is a crisis coming?

Despite a successful start, Real Madrid are not in an ideal situation. Moreover, after the Spanish Super Cup debacle, it has deepened its deficit in the league, in which it already has to operate with an eight-point deficit.

In the domestic cup, they have managed to reach the semi-finals, where they will face an in-form and confident Barcelona. A loss would be another blow to the club’s already shaky confidence.

Real Madrid will be looking to boost this at the Club World Cup, where they will have to cope without important players and will not have an easy situation.

Real’s players will surely be entering the tournament with the knowledge that a possible failure would only add to the doubts of their overall presentation in the current season.

Can Ancelotti do it?

The question naturally arises as to whether Ancelotti is the right man to handle the crisis. Real would certainly not be hurt by a boost in the form of young and fresh forces that the club could call upon from its youth set-up.

Ancelotti is notorious for simply not giving offspring and youngsters from the academy a chance and that could only hurt Real given the large youthful squad.

If the White Ballet are on the verge of a crisis, young footballers could provide the necessary boost. However, it can be expected that the Italian coach will not give them many opportunities and so players like Arribas or Vinicius Tobias will have to continue to wait for their chance.

The current situation is not made any easier by the club’s management, who have refused any reinforcements in the January transfer window, saying that the current state of the club is sufficient. Real thus refused, for example, the signing of Cancelo, who was offered to them.

According to Fabrizio Romano, the club is relying on the current players and possible additions from the youth team, which, however, Ancelotti is not using at all.
