Cameron Smith dominated LIV Chicago in his second start! The team game was dominated by Johnson and Co.
The LIV Golf Series has its fifth event in its short history, but at the same time it has a new champion. Twenty-nine-year-old Australian professional Cameron Smith competed in only his second LIV event after retiring from the PGA Tour. Not only was he one of the traditional highlights of the game, this time he left the entire starting field behind him.
Cameron Smith has had a very turbulent year. He has played eighteen tournaments on the PGA Tour, including seven top-10 finishes. Three of his season’s triumphs also include a title at the famous major tournament, The Open Championship.
But after the FedEx Cup playoffs ended, speculation was confirmed when the Australian embarked on a new adventure with the LIV Golf series, run by former PGA legend Greg Norman. He still reminisces about his opening appearance in Boston two weeks ago.
“I haven’t been under that much pressure all year when playing. I feel like I needed to prove to myself and probably even more to other people that just because I changed tours doesn’t mean I’m a worse player because of it. I’m still here to win,” the world No. 3 player returns to his debut with LIV Golf for the official LIV Golf website.
He didn’t do too badly there anymore, finishing in a tie for fourth place, just one shot behind the trio of players who eventually tied for the shootout win.
Now Smith had walked to the finish alone. He went into the final round at the Rich Harvest Farms course in Chicago with a three-shot lead, and the same score differential shone through after his final putt on the eighteenth green.
He dominated the tournament on a score of -13, with the American duo of Dustin Johnson and Peter Uihlein finishing in a tie for second. Although the individuals’ play at the end of the event in Chicago did not bring any drama like two weeks ago in Boston, there was plenty to play for until the very end thanks to the team play.
That’s where Boston champion Dustin Johnson could rejoice. His team called 4 ACES GC won by one shot over their competitors. With Patrick Reed, Taylor Gnoch and Pat Perez, they split the sum of three million US dollars. LIV Chicago Invitational winner Cameron Smith cashed in $4 million for the win alone.
The American continent will now take a break from the LIV series. In just two weeks, the show will move to Bangkok, followed by Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. The LIV Golf series will return to the USA on October 27. It will play its final event of the 2022 season in Miami at the Donald Trump Course.
