Cameron Norrie is on his way to defend his triumph in Indian Wells! Can he do it?
British tennis player Cameron Norrie shocked all tennis fans with his triumph at the Indian Wells tournament. But it would be even more surprising if he could defend his title. He is well on his way to doing so, having already reached the quarter-finals.
British tennis player Cameron Norrie shocked all tennis fans with his triumph at the Indian Wells tournament. But it would be even more surprising if he could defend his title. He iswell on his way to doing so, having already reached the quarter-finals.
Cameron Norrie was in the form of his life last year in Indian Wells. On his way to the final he beat Tennys Sandgren, Roberto Bautista-Agut, Tommy Paul, Diego Schwartzman and Grigor Dimitrov.
In the final of one of the most prestigious events on the ATP circuit, he faced Nikoloz Basilashvili. The latter managed to beat Karen Khachanov and Stefanos Tsitsipas in the previous round of the tournament.
The 26-year-old Briton was able to enjoy the victory after sets 3::6, 6::4 and 6::1. For him it was also the biggest success in his tennis career so far. Thanks to him we can find him on the twelfth place of the ATP ranking.
But it could be even better. Norrie is on his way to defending his triumph from last year, something few expected. The confidant of coach Facundo Lugones has successively knocked out Pedro Martinez, Nikoloz Basilashvili and the local Jenson Brooksby. Had he managed to advance to the semi-finals, he would have been among the top ten tennis players in the world for the first time in his career.
So all the evidence suggests that Norrie is comfortable in that environment. The fact that Daniil Medvedev, Alexander Zverev, Felix Auger-Aliassime, Casper Ruud, Hubert Hurkacz and Jannik Sinner have already dropped out of the tournament increases his chances of defending. In addition, Novak Djokovic was unable to play due to vaccinations.
Although most of the elite players are no longer in the tournament, Norrie is certainly not going to have an easy time. His opponent in the quarterfinals will be Carlos Alcaraz. If he advances, he would face the better of Nick Kyrgios – Rafael Nadal.
