La Liga was back after the national break, and the decision of the competition’s management raised eyebrows. It decided to postpone the match between Barcelona and Sevilla due to the late return of the Blaugranas players from the national team reunions in South America. Villarreal’s match with Alaves was not played for the same reason.
However, Real Madrid and Atlético Madrid had to play their matches. For example, the White Ballet’s foursome of Casemiro, Militao, Vinicius and Valverde did not return until the weekend.
But let’s move on to the matches of the 4th round of La Liga. Levante went ahead against Vallecano, but Guardiola secured a point for the newcomers in the 92nd minute. Athletic Bilbao beat Mallorca 2-0, with Vivian and Iñaki Williams scoring in the second half. It was the first defeat in the competition for the team from the Balearic Islands and they are in a comfortable 8th place with seven points.
Sunday’s match opened with a duel between defending champion Atlético Madrid and third-placed Espanyol. Raul de Tomas, a Real Madrid alumnus, sent the Barcelona team into the lead in the 40th minute, so the motivation was certainly taken care of against Atlético.
In the 53rd minute, Lemar equalised for the visitors, but the goal was disallowed due to an offside after consultation with VAR. In the 79th minute, however, the Colchoneros came close to equalising when Yannick Carrasco equalised.
Then came a rather controversial moment when the main referee set 10 minutes. Two consultations with VAR and a few treatments certainly should have set it up properly, but 6-7 minutes would have been more adequate than ten.
However, Diego Simeone’s charges took advantage of that and Thomas Lemar made the decision in the ninth minute of the set-up. Atleti thus remain unbeaten in the league after three wins and one draw.
Valencia are having a great recovery. When the owner sold off almost the entire squad last year, the traditional team at the bottom of the table was struggling. This year, however, the Bats have made a great start to the season, after a 4-1 win at Osasuna they climbed to the top of the table for a couple of hours and are off to a great start with 10 points and a 9-2 record.
Cádiz welcomed Real Sociedad and we didn’t see a goal in the first half. In the 71st minute, captain Mikel Oyarzabal sent the visitors into the lead and scored a second time. In the 83rd minute, Juan Cala was shown a second yellow card for his foul in the penalty area and took an early shower. Oyarzabal converted the penalty safely and La Real won 2-0 in Andalusia.
In the last match of the fourth round of La Liga, Real Madrid welcomed Celta Vigo. The match was also special because the White Ballet was returning to its temple at the Santiago Bernabéu after a year and a half. And at the start, it looked like Real’s return was going to be bitter.
Mina sent Celta into the lead in the fourth minute. After that, Los Blancos swarmed their opponents to their own net, until Benzema equalised from great pressure in the 24th minute. However, from a rare breakaway opportunity, Celta went ahead again when Cervi scored. Celta Vigo went into the box with a 2-1 scoreline.
In the second half, however, there was almost only one team on the pitch. Real equalised in the 46th minute when a beautiful centre from youngster Gutiérrez was headed in by Benzema. In the 54th minute, the home side took the lead when, after a beautiful through ball from Benzema, Vinícius raced through on goal and scored.
In the 66th minute, fresh signing Eduardo Camavinga came on and made a dream debut. Luka Modric made a beautiful run through the attacking half of the pitch, his shot was still parried by Dituro, but the ball was promptly headed into the net by the 18-year-old Camavinga.
In the 87th minute, Vinícius was beautifully weaving his way through the visiting penalty area until he was illegally stopped. The penalty was safely converted by Benzema, who scored a hat-trick. Real Madrid once again topped the table with 10 points and a score of 13:6.
Next week, the two best teams in the league will face off, with Valencia welcoming Real Madrid to the Estadio Mestalla.
