Emerson Royal is a 22-year-old Brazilian full-back. He was brought to Europe from his native country by Barcelona, who in turn sold him to Real Betis. That was in 2019.
In the summer, the Catalans pulled the Brazilian footballer back. He was unveiled as a new signing on 2 August. He came for 9 million euros. In La Liga, he even jumped into three competitive matches for Barcelona.
But now he is on his way to England. After less than two months at Barcelona, he will sign for Tottenham Hotspur. The London club will acquire him for 25 million euros.
On his arrival at Camp Nou, club boss Joan Laporta said he hoped Emerson would stay at the club for a long time. This was matched by the fact that there was a €300 million buyout clause in his contract.
The question is how much of a role is played by business acumen or the fact that Barcelona now need money at any cost. What is certain, however, is that this situation makes football fans abroad wonder.
