When Gilbert Burns accepted a fight with Khamzat Chimaev, he had nothing to gain. Sure, he could have put an end to the hype surrounding the rising star, but a rankings win would have done nothing for him, probably wouldn’t have gotten him any closer to another title shot.
After all, the Brazilian was number two in the welterweight rankings before the fight, while Chimaev was only eleventh. However, after a close win on points, the Chechen-born Swedish fighter moved up to third, with Burns now fourth.
Given the way the fight went, everyone would definitely like to see a rematch. And Burns himself has asked for one. “I believe we’re not done with each other yet. I’m not afraid to fight anyone at our weight. Now I’ve proven it again. I want one thing back from Khamzat, I want civility,” he expressed to TSN.
“I was ranked number two, yet I accepted the fight with him. I want a rematch. If he beats Colby Covington, he’ll fight Kamaru Usman. I want our rematch to be in his next three fights at the latest,” Burns added.
The Brazilian admitted that he tried to negotiate with the UFC to make the fight go five rounds. However, the organization was against it. This was mainly because there were two title fights scheduled right after Burns vs. Chimaev.
Burns also claims that his fight with Chimaev was really entertaining, however, he says it would have been even better in a five round fight.
And what did Chimaev have to say about that? “I’ll make sure you lose your soul in five rounds,” was the swift response from the Swedish fighter, who praised his Brazilian rival after the win.
