The semi-finals of the African Championship will pit the national teams of Burkina Faso and Senegal against each other. Burkina Faso has already managed to surprise the favourite twice in the knockout matches, can they do it again?
Burkina Faso advanced to the knockout stage from second place in Group A. They gained four points, lost three points to first-placed Cameroon and finished above third-placed Cape Verde on points. They maintained a 3-3 draw.
In the eighth round, they faced Gabon, whom they played 1-1 after 90 minutes. The extra time did not produce a goal, so a penalty shootout was decided, which went better for Burkina Faso. In the quarter-finals, Burkina Faso knocked out Tunisia 1-0.
Senegal managed to advance from first place in their group, but did not put in a convincing performance. In Group B, it won once and drew twice. However, both draws were goalless and the win ended in a 1: 0 result. Of the three matches in the group, Senegal had a score of 1: 0.
However, Senegal managed to shoot out the knockout matches. The Senegalese won 2: 0 against Cape Verde in the eighth round and in the quarter-finals they beat Equatorial Guinea 3: 1. The uncertain results from the group are thus forgotten and the Senegalese players are in good spirits ahead of the semi-finals.
In the eighth-final between Senegal and Cape Verde, Sadio Mané was forced to make a substitution after a collision with an opposing player. He had to be taken to hospital. However, he came on in the quarter-final and his concussion was not noticeable. He will now start in the semi-finals as well and will fuel his team’s attacking efforts.
The Senegalese team has a solid defence to rely on. Chelsea’s Edouard Mendy is in goal. In front of him are Koulibaly, Diallo, Sarr and Ciss. This defence has only scored one goal so far in the tournament.
Burkina Faso has already managed to surprise the two favourites, but its surprise run through the championship will most likely end in the semi-finals. This is an important match and Senegal will not miss out on a place in the final.
