Last weekend delivered one of the best tournaments of the year so far. However, die-hard UFC fans had to watch another sad fight by a legend. Tony Ferguson went to action again and lost again. Now he got advice from another legend of the best organization on the planet.
While UFC 291 delivered some great entertainment, it also delivered another sad spectacle. Two exhibition knockouts by headkick, for a total of nine finishes out of eleven fights on the card. And one of those finishes involved the aforementioned sad spectacle.
Fans were admittedly looking forward to seeing Tony Ferguson in action again. Everyone was hoping that he could pick himself up and beat Bobby Green, but alas. The opponent, who in his prime would probably have been swept away like nothing, was better all the time, landing shots, not in any great danger himself.
Moreover, with a few seconds left, Green ended the match on a submission. It wouldn’t have been Ferguson if he’d knocked it off. He let himself fall asleep. Once again he showed the heart of a true warrior, however, the fans really resented his performance.
Not long ago, he had the longest win streak in the UFC, winning 12 fights in a row and destroying one opponent after another. Now he’s on a six-fight losing streak. Albeit with quality fighters, however, it’s obvious that age, his mental issues and brutal training methods have caught up with Ferguson.
Now El Cucuy has received unsolicited and brutally honest advice from commentator and UFC legend Daniel Cormier.
“He’s lost six straight. He hasn’t lost to bad opponents, he’s been beaten by Diaz, Chandler, Dariush, Gaethje and Green, but the reality is he’s 39 years old. As much as he wants to fight, his body doesn’t seem to allow him to do everything his mind tells him to do,” BJPenn quotes Cormier as saying.
“Maybe it’s time for Tony to tell the UFC that he wants lighter opponents or to go fight differently. He’s going to be mad at me, but the body doesn’t react the way the mind wants it to anymore. So I’m voting for Tony to retire,” Cormier added.
