Bruno Fernandes? He hasn’t shown anything at the Euros so far, troubling Jose Mourinho

Portugal has without a doubt one of the most dangerous attacks in the entire championship. But that hasn’t quite been the case so far, and one of the reasons for that is the performance of Bruno Fernandes, from whom much more was expected. José Mourinho feels the same way, and he is clear that the Manchester United star is the key player in their quest for success.
Portugal managed to beat Hungary 3-0 at the start, but it wasn’t until the 84th minute that the first goal was scored. After that, Fernando Santos’ charges got knocked out by Germany and now they will play France for everything.
Of course, it must be added that this group is very difficult, as there are three aspirants for the overall victory and then Hungary, who played their matches in front of a full stadium of great fans.
Even so, not progressing from the group would be a big disappointment for the reigning European champions. However, José Mourinho still believes in his countrymen!
“Portugal can beat anyone. But we need all 11 players to play. In the last two games, Bruno Fernandes has been on the pitch, but he hasn’t played. I hope he wakes up against France because he is a player with incredible potential,” Mourinho told talkSPORT.
It was Fernandes who was supposed to be the man who would link the defence with the attack and send the attacking trio of Jota – Ronaldo – Silva into chances. The Portuguese midfielder had a magnificent season at Manchester United, scoring 28 goals in 58 games and adding a further 17 assists. And that’s why everyone expected the most from him.
However, he hasn’t exactly been doing a great job in the tournament! Personally, I also see a problem in the fact that Fernandes has the pair of Pereira – Carvalho behind him, who while great defensively, are lagging behind in terms of creativity.
Carvalho in particular remains well behind expectations, who was one of the weakest links in both games and was substituted in both games, just like Fernandes. Thus, if this pair does not pick up, and it would not be a surprise if the Real Betis midfielder is already only on the bench, the defending champions could end up already in the group.
It’s not very likely, though, as Portugal only need to not lose by more than two goals. And Hungary’s win over Germany can’t be counted on too much either. Anyway, anything can happen…
But it’s certainly not a bad thing to remember how Portugal won Euro 2016. After three draws in the group came another draw. Ronaldo and co. eventually beat the Croatians in extra time. They only went on from the quarter-finals after penalties and scored their only win in normal time in the semi-final against Wales 2-0.
They then beat the French in extra time to become European champions. It is never good to write off Portugal!
