Last year, as champions, they qualified for at least the Europa League, this year Brondby Copenhagen will face three rounds of the Conference League. But before the start of the European tour, they will welcome Aarhus to the league. What to expect from the game and what to bet on?
For Brondby, Sunday’s game will not only be their first league game, but also a dress rehearsal for the Conference Europa League qualifiers, which they will open on Thursday against Pogon Szczecin from Poland. In their four games in preparation, they have won two and drawn and lost once.
Aarhus managed only two friendlies, in which it lost and drew. They will want to forget last year’s failed season very quickly, finishing only tenth in the league and saving themselves by a single point.
The home side will rely on goals from Anis Slimane, the Tunisian international midfielder scored twice and assisted five times last season. The talented American number 10 Christian Cappis, who peeked into the senior national team at the age of 21, added three more accurate shots.
The visitors are led by captain and former Danish international Patrick Mortensen, who scored six times from the top of the attack last season. Iceland’s central midfielder Mikael Anderson opened the net five times and added three goal assists.
Brondby is one of the best defending teams. It has scored more than once in only one of its last four games and had the league’s fourth-best defense last year.
That doesn’t play into the hands of Aarhus, who scored the second lowest number of goals, namely thirty-one.
Considering Brondby’s well-functioning defence and relatively successful preparation, I think they will confirm their role as favourites and win at home.
