Jon Jones vs. Brock Lesnar? This duel was in play, at least in theory, back in 2017. Back then, the former defeated Daniel Cormier and challenged the former UFC heavyweight champion, who became, among other things, a star of the WWE organization.
Lesnar is a huge name in the United States. So when Jones challenged him at the time, UFC boss Dana White was wringing his hands. One of the biggest selling fights of all time was looming. Lesnar himself accepted the offer.
The fight never happened, however, as Jones tested positive for doping. Although Jones eventually fought again, reigning as a welterweight again, he was now on a three-year hiatus, during which he was preparing to move up to heavyweight.
He won the title in his very first fight, sovereignly outpointing Ciryl Gane, and again spoke of how he could see himself fighting Lesnar. But he is 45 years old and although there is speculation in America about his end in WWE, the match has been refuted by the UFC boss.
“Brock and I have an excellent relationship. We’ve always had it. But I don’t think he wants to fight anymore. He’s made a lot of money. He’s been in the UFC before, he won the heavyweight title. He’s got nothing to prove. I don’t think he’s going into the fight,” BJPenn.com quoted White as saying.
After all, Lesnar last fought in the UFC in 2016 and will celebrate his 46th birthday this summer. While a duel with Jones might be attractive for him as well, it probably wouldn’t make sense for him.
Plus, Jones needs to slowly start focusing on another star. A legendary one, but unfortunately not as famous. The next opponent for Jones is Stipe Miocic, one of the best heavyweights of all time.
Miocic hasn’t fought since March 2021, when he was robbed of his title by Francis Ngannou. His duel with Jones is expected to take place in July.
