This summer, British football fans are set to embark on an unforgettable football pilgrimage to Germany for the upcoming EURO 2024 tournament. It looks like they’re in for a different challenge than just supporting their teams.
State Department warning
The UK Foreign Office has issued official travel advice for fans travelling to Germany for the Euro football tournament, which will be held in ten German cities from mid-June to mid-July.
The BBC news website reports that hundreds of thousands of British fans are expected to travel to the tournament. Indeed, an official warning from the British government says that German beer may be stronger than what they are used to at home. And that too much could lead to exclusion from football matches.
The strength of German beer
The main point of this warning is the information about the strength of German beer. According to the Foreign Office, the alcohol content of British beers averages 4.4 per cent. In contrast, German beer typically has an alcohol content between 4.7 and 5.4 per cent. This small, but distinct, difference may affect fans who are not used to such alcohol concentration.
Paul Goodwin, co-founder of the Scottish Football Fans Association, reacted to this warning with a degree of scepticism. “There are of course many things that Scotland fans need to be warned about but we don’t really think this is one of them,” he told the BBC.
Fears of embarrassment at EURO 2024
It is a lesson for fans to realise that local customs and norms may be different to those they are used to at home. Excessive enthusiasm and alcohol consumption can lead to unpleasant situations. Including the possibility of not being allowed into the stadium due to drunkenness.
Although the warning may seem like a joke. It is important to remember that alcohol can affect behavior and decision making. Therefore, fans must behave responsibly and obey local laws so that everyone can enjoy the football atmosphere without complications.
With the EURO 2024 tournament coming up, the Ministry says it is imperative that fans take these warnings seriously and adapt their behaviour to the environment they go to.
The lesson is clear. Enjoy your beer! But in moderation and with respect for local norms. And laws to ensure a smooth and safe atmosphere for all fans and attendees.
