Brighton needs to calm the defence down. It could do with strengthening two positions

Tuesday’s Premier League schedule offered two big surprises. Aston Villa lost 1:3 at home to Newcastle, Brighton even took a four-goal beating from Luton. The match will forever be remembered in the club’s history.
While Brighton were clear favourites in the opening round of the Premier League, this time everything pointed to an even battle. Luton had lost only two of their previous seven games, and had also advanced to the FA Cup semi-finals at the weekend with a 96th minute goal.
Brighton know their ceiling
From the start of the season, it looked like Brighton could go even higher this season and attack the Champions League. But the squad has failed the test of real European quality, hasn’t got used to English weeks so far, and given that it hasn’t strengthened in the winter, it can’t go any higher.
It lacks a big name in the line-up, even the magician Roberto De Zerbi can’t make a consistent team out of a young roster. Still, there is no need to mourn, seventh place and the European Cup is just a point away. And the Seagulls are out of the Europa League this year, coming from first place.
“Good season, we’re doing great in Europe. I’m pretty happy with everything. But we don’t deserve to qualify for the cups again this season. Too many bad results, especially this one and the Villa game (1:6). I’m not complaining, just stating the facts. The goal should be top ten and continuing in Europe,” wrote Brighton’ s Instagram user Riverwolf in a liked comment.
Not everyone agreed with his optimism, mainly because of the chaos in the defence caused by the constructive play from the goalkeeper. The defenders are tired and not keeping up. Brighton’s games are so entertaining to the impartial spectator, with an average of 3.2 goals conceded. Only Newcastle have a higher average.
We’re missing a stopper and a six
Brighton have been missing a defensive midfielder since the departure of Yves Bissouma, Carlos Baleba is a 20-year-old talent, but he is not yet the first choice for the starting eleven. At stopper, De Zerbi has three options plus the versatile Joel Veltman. When you play for a month straight week in week out, mistakes pile up. We saw that in October.
“Congratulations to Luton. We didn’t expect to dominate given the performance of our opponents but this was the most embarrassing loss of the season along with the game against Villa. The defensive errors by Pervis and Dunk are excusable. Moder, Lamptey and Baleba had bright moments,” added fan Fernando.
