He went for a new challenge and he’s not having an easy time of it. Danish coach Brian Priske left Sparta Prague with a record of two titles, a cup win and an eighth Europa League final. He did all this in just two years. No wonder a more famous club reached for him.
However, there is no great glory on the bench of Feyenoord Rotterdam yet. After six Eredivisie games, Priske’s team is only in sixth place, and they opened the Champions League with a disgraceful 0:4 home debacle against Leverkusen. Although a number of players left the team, more was expected.
The 47-year-old coach has now given an interview to the Dutch magazine Voetbal International, which was noticed by inFotbal.cz. In it, the Danish strategist explains, for example, why he abandoned the post-match round, which he practiced before and during his engagement at Sparta Prague.
I don’t understand why we were booed, said Brian Priske
“A coach should be flexible because the road to the goal is never a straight line. The same goes for the wheel. I’m disappointed that it wasn’t accepted in the Netherlands and that the fans booed us. I still don’t understand why, but as a coach and leader you have to pay attention to the bigger picture.”
Another frequently discussed topic is the change of formation. Priske celebrated success at Letná with a 3-4-3 formation, which he has started to practice in his new job. Under pressure of circumstances, he abandoned the three-defender line-up and returned to the established system with four full-backs.
“Knowing what I know now, I can honestly say that I shouldn’t have done that. Changing the style of play to a 3-4-3 cost us too much time, and that annoys me because now there is not enough time. I dare to admit it. At some point I got the feeling that with the players we have, it’s better to play 4-3-3.”
Priske said he chose to play three defenders because of the departure of a large number of players, but as he says, it didn’t catch on. Still, he intends to work on this system and Feyenoord will use it in some phases of the game. For example, already on Wednesday in the Champions League against Girona.
In addition, the interview also included a question about the possibility of an engagement at Manchester City. Priske was persuaded to work with Pep Guardiola by his then assistant Mikel Arteta. The Dane was supposed to take care of standard situations, but in the end they did not come to an agreement.
