Sparta Prague footballers entered the new season with a draw in the opening match of the Conference Europa League preliminary round, although they created some decent scoring opportunities. How did coach Brian Priske evaluate the match against Stavanger?

“I think that especially in the first half we had enough chances to score. I’m sorry that we didn’t bring a victory to our great fans,” Priske said in an interview with the club’s website.

The Spartans produced a plethora of opportunities to strike in the opening game of the Conference Europa League. However, none of them led to a goal, so Sparta only drew with Stavanger at Letná despite a lot of pressure.

In the first half, several players of the home team were able to score. Whether it was Jan Kuchta, Lukáš Haraslín, Adam Karabec or defenders Tomáš Wiesner or Dávid Hancko, none of the chances ended behind the back of goalkeeper Patrik Gunnarsson.

Sparta were the more footballing team throughout the game, but only five of their twenty-eight shots went between the three posts.

However, the visiting team only created five shot attempts, another factor that safely interprets the course of this contest. Stavanger were rather retracted at Letná and trusted in their defensive work.

“We expected the opponent to defend, but we were surprised that they were so tight. They played compactly, even playing with six defenders at the end. You have to convert the chances we had in the first half, otherwise you make the game very difficult for yourself,” explained Priske.

The rematch is exactly one week away, and Priske’s charges will travel to Norway with one goal – to win.
