Brazilian winger Antony is making a comeback after allegations from his ex-partner. The Manchester United management announced the forward’s return to training in an official statement.
Antony is one of the other players around whom there have been numerous reports related to domestic violence against his partner. These have been denied by the Brazilian on more than one occasion. A similar case from the Red Devils ranks was youngster Mason Greenwood, who is currently wearing the jersey of Spanish side Getafe.
The management gave Antony the time needed to investigate the whole case, while the player received a full salary during this time. The Brazilian played his last game on 3 September against Arsenal, to whom Manchester United lost 1:3.
Due to the allegations, Antony was even withdrawn from the list for the Brazilian national team. However, the situation is changing and Manchester came up with an official statement on their website. According to it, the forward will soon be fully involved in the training process again.
“The first allegations were made back in June and Antony was already cooperating with the police then, not only in Brazil but also in the United Kingdom,” the aforementioned official statement reads.
“As his employer, Manchester United management has decided to resume his training process at the Carrington Centre and place him back on the list of names available for this season while the investigation continues,” the Red Devils write.
“However, this case will continue to be investigated pending further developments. As a club, we fully condemn acts of violence and abuse and recognise the importance of protecting all those involved,” reads a message on Manchester United’s website.
So potentially the 23-year-old winger could hit the ground running as early as this Saturday for the game at Old Trafford against Crystal Palace. However, given his lack of fitness, this option is highly unlikely.
Moreover, coach Erik ten Hag may not even nominate the player for the game yet. Antony has started four games in the league this season, but in the statistics of goals scored or goal assists he has two zeros so far.
