Switzerland beat Norway 5-2 in their opening match at the 2024 World Cup. This match offered several special moments. Norwegian youngster Michael Brandsegg-Nygard scored a goal in his debut start and Anders Ambühl broke the record for assists.
Brandsegg-Nygard’s debut
The Norwegian youngster is wearing the Norwegian Mory jersey and has scored 28 points in 53 games this season. It was his first full season among adults and he immediately claimed a World Championship nomination.
Unfortunately, his home country lost to Switzerland on his debut, but he did score a small success. At 18:56 in the 3rd period he was able to take advantage of a power play and reduce the score to 2:5 in Norway’s view.
The Norwegian youngster started the game in the 3rd line along with Vesterheim and Steen, but we can count on a higher lineup later in the tournament. Indeed, the Mora striker could be one of the nicest surprises of this year’s championship.
Record-breaking Ambühl
The Swiss veteran is an incredible constant in the Swiss line-up and also a constant at the World Cup. Andres Ambühl is playing his 17th record-breaking championship, and if it wasn’t for the 2020 championship being cancelled due to coronavirus, it would be championship number 18.
There are other players on the Swiss national team since the draft. Therefore, it is no surprise that Ambühl started the tournament in the 4th formation. Still, he scored his 1st point at this year’s tournament.
It was Ambühl who accurately found Niederreiter’s stick on the power play and added Switzerland’s 5th and final goal on Friday.
“He’s unbelievable. He plays the same way every year, he’s a fantastic player, he doesn’t stop. He plays exactly the same as he did 20 years ago, he is very important for us”, commented his senior teammate Sven Andrighetto. The Zurich winger scored one goal among others.
