Marie Bouzková is really enjoying this summer. First she reached the second week of the Grand Slam for the first time in her career, playing the quarterfinals of Wimbledon, now she won her first tournament on the WTA circuit.
The Livesport WTA Prague Open has been on the schedule since Monday, with the likes of world number two Anett Kontaveit and Czech number one Barbora Krejcikova on the TK Sparta Prague courts.
But the tournament has a different ruler, Marie Bouzkova, who is experiencing a breakthrough in her career. She scored her first triumph on the WTA circuit and did not lose a set in Prague.
In the first match she defeated Sinja Kraus 6-2 and 7-6, then she smoothly eliminated Dominika Šalková after 6-1 and 6-2 sets. In the quarter-finals she didn’t even bother with Russian Oksana Selekhmetova, whom she swept 6-3 and 6-0.
In the semifinals, it was the Czech Republic’s turn to fight, as she defeated 17-year-old Linda Noskova 7-6 and 6-3. In the final, Bouzkova faced Anastasia Potapova, but the seven-ranked player had no chance.
In the first set, she was caned by the home player, but Bouzkova took the second set 6-3 and celebrated her first victory of the tournament.
But there is no time for big celebrations, because Bouzkova will immediately move to the USA, where on Monday, August 1, she will face the world number ten and defending champion of last year’s US Open, Emma Raducanu, in the first round at the WTA tournament in Washington.
