Both Pliskova and Kvitova are missing from the BJK Cup nominations, there was one surprise
In early November, 12 national teams of female tennis players will descend on Prague to represent their country in the de facto first edition of the Billie Jean King Cup.
In early November, 12 national teams of female tennis players will descend on Prague to represent their country in the de facto first edition of the Billie Jean King Cup.
The renamed version of the Fed Cup must not miss the Czech team this time either, but this year they will definitely not send the strongest possible line-up. Even veteran Lucie Hradecka, who may even jump into the doubles, has been included in the nominated five.
Barbora Krejcikova, Marketa Vondrousova, Tereza Martincova and Kateřina Siniaková will play together with Hradecka. The main driver of the team should definitely be the world number five Krejcikova with Olympic silver medallist Vondroušová.
The fighter Martincova, whose rise has already taken her to the top 50, could certainly play her part in the matches. The tennis player, who probably catches the eye mainly because of her large number of tattoos, will be the team’s number three, but the currently 26-year-old would definitely deserve a chance.
Siniakova and Hradecka could be seen in action at most in doubles, where she also looms as a Krejcikova/Siniakova pair in case of emergency.
The three-time Grand Slam champion Hradecka can bring possible experience to the team and alongside captain Petr Palá she can be the calm force for the Czechs.
The home team will definitely not enter the Billie Jean King Cup as favourites, but this line-up should also be able to fight for at least promotion from the group. The BJK Cup starts on November 1 and ticket sales will open on Wednesday, October 6.
