On Wednesday, the final matches of the first round of the singles tournament were played at the AGEL Open in Ostrava Arena. The WTA 500 category event now has eight final duels on the schedule. Four Czech women will be among the top 16 singles players.

The progress of Petra Kvitova and Tereza Martincova on Monday was not followed by Karolina Pliskova on Tuesday night. The former world number one lost to the current 144th ranked player Alycia Parks from the USA after two different but lost sets 0::6 and 6::7.

Two more tennis players represented the Czech Republic in the opening matches. Their performance at the third edition of the tournament played on the hard surface in Ostravar Arena started on Wednesday afternoon.

First Barbora Krejcikova, the winner of Sunday’s final at the Tallinn Open, appeared on court. The native of Ivančice confirmed her good form and did not give a chance to the American Shelby Rogers. In an hour and a quarter we knew the final score of the match, both sets of which were 6:2.

Karolína Muchová, who started on a wild card, could complete the three Czechs in the eight-finals. Her opponent was the seventh seed Beatriz Haddad Maia from Brazil.

It was a more even battle than the previous match. After a converted fourth set point, the Olomouc-born player celebrated her first set win 6:4. The second set ended in the same way, and in this case Muchova was able to take the first match point.

Wednesday evening matches, including Kvitova’s clash with world number four Paula Badosa of Spain, will start the eight-final programme. On Thursday, the remaining home players who advanced from the first round will play.

Muchova will challenge Caty McNally of the USA, while the other two Czechs will face the top-seeded singles players at the 2022 AGEL Open. Martincova will face defending champion Anett Kontaveit of Estonia, while Krejcikova will try to get past Switzerland’s Belinda Bencic. Live broadcasts from Ostrava’s “pentastovky” will be broadcast by O2 TV Sport and O2 TV Tennis.
