The second semi-final of the Champions League is over. While it didn’t recognize the first winners, we saw only one goal in Borussia Dortmund’s match against PSG. The home side are now two games away from the trophy and closer to reaching the final with a 1:0 win.

On Tuesday we witnessed a 2: 2 draw between Bayern Munich and Real Madrid. The Champions League continued on Wednesday when Borussia Dortmund played against Paris Saint-Germain.

The visitors were the paper favourites. On the other hand, the home side have already shown in several matches that they are a force to be reckoned with. Borussia created their first big chance in the 14th minute, when Marcel Sabitzer got his shot away.

The Austrian midfielder got to the ball in the whitewash and sent a shot towards the right post, but Gianluigi Donnarumma was there in time. In the 20th minute, the Parisians asked the referee to whistle for a penalty kick, but the referee did not grant their request.

Lucas Hernandez in a PSG jersey went down in the Dortmund penalty area after a standard situation. The head referee allowed the game to continue, but did not call a penalty for the Frenchman. Replays, however, suggested that Sabitzer had swung at Hernandez.

In the 36th minute, the fans at the Signal Iduna Park were ready for the goal. Nico Schlotterbeck sent an accurate cross to the advancing Niclas Fülkrug. The experienced German forward sent a precise shot towards the left post, where the Italian goalkeeper had no chance to be on time.

Donnarumma worked himself into a good sweat shortly before the end of the half when he dealt with a shot from Sabitzer.

Dortmund defended a narrow win in the second half

The visitors, who were very unlucky to get back on the field, were the ones who threatened. In the 51st minute, Kylian Mbappé hit the bar first, followed shortly after by Achraf Hakimi, whose shot also hit only the post. PSG, however, made the home side angry, with Gregor Kobel again making a great save from Mbappé in the 54th.

Two minutes later, Fabian Ruiz also narrowly missed the bar with his header. Anyone who thought it was just PSG playing would have been mistaken. Fülkrug blew his chance in the 60th minute, and six minutes later he didn’t increase his goal tally either, heading over.

PSG raced for an equaliser but also failed in the 72nd minute on goalkeeper Kobel, who covered Dembélé’s shot. Both Hakimi and substitute Vitinha were then off target and Borussia can celebrate a narrow 1-0 win. Mats Hummels was the player of the match, while Jadon Sancho also deserved the award for his great performance.

However, the second half brought some truly wonderful football full of several chances that definitely met the goal parameters. Dortmund will therefore have the better of the rematch.
