Bořil had a horrible championship, got a lot of flak from Czech fans
He has made great strides in recent years, working his way up to the best left-back in the Fortuna Liga, despite being right-handed. The European Championship didn’t work out so well for him though, he was involved in half of the goals conceded and even up front he wasn’t the Bořil we know.
He has made great strides in recent years, working his way up to the best left-back in the Fortuna Liga, despite being right-handed. The European Championship didn’t work out so well for him though, he was involved in half of the goals conceded and even up front he wasn’t the Bořil we know. Especially in the quarter-final match against Denmark.
The very deployment of Jan Bořil against Denmark was quite unexpected. Pavel Kadeřábek was excellent against the Dutch, while the Slavia defender has struggled so far in the tournament.
Bořil showed from the beginning of the match that he was not 100% ready. He was there for the second goal when he didn’t stop Kasper Dolberg from scoring. Yes, he could hardly do anything about it, but on the other hand, it wasn’t the first time he didn’t keep up.
Moments earlier, Mikkel Damsgaard had a scoring chance thanks to his sloppiness and only thanks to Tomas Vaclik it wasn’t another goal. Bořil was dragging his feet and it was clear that he has had a tough season in a Slavia jersey.
We saw only the minimum of his qualities at the tournament, especially up front, a lot more was expected from him. He was involved in two of the four goals scored by the Czech team (the aforementioned Dolberg goal and Raheem Sterling’s goal).
Czech fans were very unhappy with Boril’s performance. Even after the line-up was announced, they complained and after the end of the match they gave him a “hard time”.
Fan Tomas wrote the following on Facebook. “He set up three goals, scored one goal and made a fool of himself. If I were Kadeřábek, I’d throw their jersey away and go for a beer.”
Dozens of users agreed with him, some fans even begged him to end his national team career.
Once again, this brought back the words of Jindřich Trpišovský, who warned before the tournament that Bořil had played the most games and might not be able to handle too many minutes.
