Goals were expected, but only one was scored and there wasn’t much action. The first semi-final between AS Roma and Bayer Leverkusen ended 1-0 in the Italian capital. It was decided by the young Edoardo Bove.
Exequiel Palacios had the first chance in the first minute of the match, but his shot was too weak and the goalkeeper made a good save. Six minutes later, Florian Wirtz placed the ball better with a cross that just missed the left post.
The home side threatened in the 19th minute, but a great chance by stopper Roger Ibanez was well saved by Finnish goalkeeper Lukas Hradecky. After that, the game lost its pace, which was not helped by the two treatments.
The game went to the booths after a great boredom with a goalless draw. After the change of sides, the Wolves were more active, but the biggest chance of the first five minutes was a shot centre, which was turned away by the visiting defence.
In the 63rd minute, the celebration was on. Youngster Edoardo Bove made a quick run and crossed to Tammy Abraham. Hradecky saved, but the incoming Bove hit the back post from a volley.
Otherwise, the game continued at a very tepid pace, with only Bove on hand, but this time he scored from his first touch.
In the 87th minute, the visitors could have equalised after a goalkeeping error, Jeremie Frimpong hit the open goal, but one of the defending players got in behind Ruie Patricio.
José Mourinho’s side had already secured the win and will go into the return leg with a one-goal lead. The game is in Germany in a week’s time.
