At the Estadio Juan Domingo Perón, we waited quite a while for our first chance. Apart from the corner kicks, it wasn’t until the 39th minute that any excitement happened in front of goal.
Juan Quintero of Racing, after a pass on the edge of the penalty area, took a shot and just missed the crossbar of the opponent’s goal.
At half-time, Boca coach Jorge Almiron decided to make two substitutions. Nicolas Valentini and Miguel Merentiel stayed in the booth and were replaced by Marcelo Weigandt and Lucas Janson.
After the change of sides, the Racing players demanded a penalty after a disputed situation, but the referee did not point to the spot.
The game went into extra time without any major chances, where there was no major threat to either goalkeeper. And so the penalty shootout followed.
Exequiel Zeballos of Boca Juniors was the first to take the penalty kick, and he hit it just inside the right post. Gonzalo Piovi of Racing also headed for the same spot, but Sergio Romero saved the penalty.
Lucas Janson then had no problem scoring and sent Boca into a two-goal lead, which was reduced by Juan Quintero.
Summer signing Edinson Cavani then converted for Boca Juniors. However, the Racing players didn’t have their day and Leonardo Sigali didn’t convert his attempt either. Marcos Rojo was thus in charge of the decisive try, which he converted to send Bocu Juniors into the semi-finals of the Copa Libertadores.
