At the beginning of February, information that would revolutionise contemporary football went around the world. The International Federation of Association Football (IFAB) was considering the introduction of a blue cards. But FIFA president Gianni Infantino rejected the potential new regulations.

The International Federation of Association Football (IFAB) had one big innovation in mind. The Telegraph newspaper came out with an exclusive in early February, which has since started circulating all football media and sports sites.

The big news was to be the blue card, which has been tried in amateur competitions so far. In England, it was reportedly envisaged that the blue cards would be tested in the oldest club competition, the FA Cup. And that’s in both the men’s and women’s competitions.

The original plan talks of a new way to punish sinners who commit cynical fouls or express disagreement with the referee. The combination of two blue cards, or a blue and a yellow card, should result in an expulsion.

Should a player receive an outright yellow card from the referee, he would have to leave the field for ten minutes. Immediately after the announcement of the upcoming news, fans compared the rule to hockey. There a player also leaves the field of play depending on the infraction.

We reported more about the blue cards in a previous article. But what is the reality of seeing blue cards in professional men’s football?

FIFA is against blue cards, says Infantino

FIFA president Gianni Infantino has spoken out on exactly this subject in an interview with Sky Sports in the last few hours. In it, he clarified that the world football association rejects the new rules.

“It’s a non-existent topic for us. FIFA is totally against blue cards. Let me be clear. It is a red card for the idea of blue cards,” Infantino said in the interview, which was also quoted by The Independent.

This idea is not only disliked by fans, but also by coaches and players. According to them, football would become primarily a strategic chess game.
