Big problem for Premier League teams! Which South Americans might not be available for their national teams?
Some Premier League teams are solving a big problem. Because of the late kick-offs of the CONMEBOL World Cup qualifiers, they are likely to have to cut some of their stars for league games.
Some Premier League teams are solving a big problem. Because of the late kick-offs of the CONMEBOL World Cup qualifiers, they are likely to have to cut some of their stars for league games.
Both Brazil and Argentina have already signalled in advance that they will not be releasing Premier League players from their last games to prepare for club duels.
It just might cause quite a problem as some players only have 35 hours between their national team and club duels. Liverpool tried to resolve the situation by postponing the match, but Watford rejected that.
“Nobody thought about staggering the games and it’s Liverpool’s problem, not anybody else’s. Good for Watford. I just don’t know how you can do such things and nobody responds to the match plan,” an angry Liverpool coach Jürgen Klopp commented on the situation to Sky Sports.
Liverpool have two players in the Brazil squad, goalkeeper Alisson and midfielder Fabinho. The Canaries are due to play their game on Friday at 1:30am UK time, but as early as Saturday at 12:30pm UK time Liverpool will challenge Watford. Both players have only 35 hours between their duels.
Manchester City also have two players in the Brazil squad – Gabriel Jesus and Ederson. Both players in the Citizens starting line-up are 37.5 hours away from the Brazil game and the Burnley game.
Tottenham have Emerson Royal in Brazil’s squad, while Cristian Romero and Giovani Lo Celso will don the Argentina jersey and face Peru at 1:30am UK time on Friday. Davinson Sanchez will then start for Colombia on Thursday at 10pm UK time. Tottenham will play Newcastle on Sunday at 4:30 p.m.
Manchester United players Fred (Brazil) and Edinson Cavani (Uruguay) both have 37.5 hours between their duels. The Red Devils take on Leicester on Sunday at 15::00.
Yerri Mina of Everton (Colombia), Miguel Almiron of Newcastle (Paraguay), Douglas Luiz and Emi Martínez of Aston Villa (Brazil, Argentina), Thiago Silva of Chelsea (Brazil) and Raphinha of Leeds (Brazil) will also have problems.
Any gap of less than 40 hours between the two games is probably too short for the players to recover and prepare for the next game.
Tottenham, Newcastle and Everton, who don’t play their Premier League games until Sunday, have the best chance.
