Italian tennis player Jannik Sinner may remain a bit out of the limelight. Still, he is showing great results at the US open and he already knows what it is like to beat Alcaraz. He may soon meet the defending champion at the last Grand Slam of the season. Who does the Italian still have to get past and what is his view of the phenomenal Spaniard?
Jannik Sinner is the number six player in the ATP rankings, which is a testament to his excellent results, but he also remains out of the main attention of the tennis public. After all, the entire season has been dominated by the rivalry between Djokovic and Alcaraz.
It was the twenty-two-year-old Italian who was considered a great rival of Alcaraz and at the beginning of the year there were comments predicting that it would be him who would soon form an elite pair on the ATP circuit together with the twenty-year-old Spaniard.
So far it hasn’t happened, but what hasn’t could be. Sinner is, in fact, the promise of world tennis for several reasons.
Rivalry with Alcaraz and current form
The two players played a great doubles match together in the US this year. In the Masters in Miami and Indiana Wells, Alcaraz was victorious in their first encounter, but Sinner returned the favour a fortnight later.
Their historical record is also very even. The Italian managed to win three of the seven duels played between the two tennis players of the upcoming generation.
However, Sinner has only words of praise for Alcaraz. He acknowledges that his younger competitor is a step ahead of him, but takes the positives from it. The Spaniard motivates him to improve himself. And that’s exactly what Sinner is doing.
He played his first Grand Slam semi-final at Wimbledon this year and triumphed at the Masters in Toronto a month later. He’s also handling this year’s US open in style so far.
He beat both Germany’s Hanfmann and compatriot Sonega without losing a set and praises the progress he and his team have made. Especially in his net play. According to his own words, he feels better and better on the court.
Finally ..
The Italian could play Alcaraz in the quarterfinals. He has two more matches to go before he can advance. The first one is the duel with the veteran Wawrinka, followed by the match with the German Zverev.
Nothing against the duels between Alcaraz and Djokovic, by any means. But if the stagnant waters in the events at the top of the ATP are muddied by the young Italian, most fans will definitely not be angry. And he seems to be on his way.
