Big change! Exactly one year from now, we will say goodbye to league football in an unconventional way, with the eyes of the fans on Qatar
Next year, on 12 and 13 November, we will experience a very unusual first half of the 2022/23 season, as we say goodbye to league matches for a month and turn our attention to Qatar for the World Cup.
Next year, on 12 and 13 November, we will experience a very unusual first half of the 2022/23 season, as we say goodbye to league games for a month and turn our attention to Qatar for the World Cup.
This will be the twenty-second FIFA World Cup and, due to the high temperatures that prevail in Qatar during the summer months, it will unusually start on 21 November and end on 18 December.
A total of five candidates bid to host the World Cup:: Qatar, USA, South Korea, Japan and Australia. In the end, however, despite much criticism, it was the controversial Qatar that won.
Thanks to its wealth from oil and gas production, Qatar has rushed to build the eight stadiums it envisages for the forthcoming World Cup, which can be found in seven cities.
The largest of these is the 86,000-seat Lusail Iconic Stadium, where the entire championship will begin and also end with the final duel.
However, this unconventional period means, of course, that the Premier League, for example, which kicks off the following year on August 6, will be suspended in November when the last round next year takes place on November 12 and 13, just a week before the start of the championship.
It is then scheduled to return to English turf on Boxing Day (December 26). The last round of the Premier League will then be played on 28 May 2023.
A similar fate awaits other leagues around the world, of course. It will be very unconventional, but hopefully it will be a period full of great sporting moments, rather than dealing with racism and other things that divide fans from different countries or cultures.
