Another scandal is growing significantly in Serie A. This time, it is a betting scandal, which according to Italian media reports is said to involve more than a dozen players.
One of the most famous ones involved in this scandal is twenty-two-year-old Nicolo Fagioli. This Juventus Turin talent was investigated for betting on an illegal platform, which he later admitted to Turin prosecutors.
He was reportedly happy to hand over his phone to the police, which quickly widened the scope of the scandal. But of course, there are more known names involved in the case.
The other suspects are Sandro Tonali, who moved from AC Milan to Newcastle United in the summer, and Nicolo Zaniolo, who currently wears the Aston Villa jersey. Both players withdrew from the Italian training camp after being questioned by police.
According to Football Italia, which cites information from the well-known newspaper La Repubblica, the investigation has been ongoing for several weeks.
Meanwhile, Fagioli’s bets were reportedly discovered by chance when police were investigating the betting activities of an unnamed criminal group. The talented Bianconeri player was said to have gambled €100,000 over the last 18 months.
And what is the punishment for all the wrongdoers? Those players who do not cooperate with the police face a ban of up to three years.
