Best scorer at the championship? Own goal. EURO 2020 has already seen as many as in its entire history
This year’s EURO is full of attractive matches, beautiful goals, turnovers in the last minutes, but also curious own goals. The championship has already seen 9 unlucky ones.
This year’s EURO is full of attractive matches, beautiful goals, turnovers in the last minutes, but also curious own goals. The championship has already seen 9 unlucky ones.
In the entire history of the European Championship, there have been as many own goals as in this year’s championship. From 1960 to 2016, nine own goals have fallen in championships, the same as this year’s.
The tournament symbolically started with the first own goal. In the opening match between Italy and Turkey, it was scored by Merih Demiral.
However, the own goals kept coming until the most curious one came in the eighth round. In the match between Spain and Croatia, midfielder Pedri passed the ball to Unai Simon from almost half the field, but it skipped over his foot and went over the line.
At the moment, with a bit of exaggeration, his own goal is the top scorer of the tournament.
9 – Own goal
5 – Cristiano Ronaldo
4 – Patrik Schick
4 – Karim Benzema
France’s first goal of the tournament didn’t come from Les Bleus either, as Mats Hummels put his shot into the net.
Slovakia even scored two own goals against Spain, the unlucky ones were Martin Dúbravka and Juraj Kucka.
