The duel between Germany and Portugal offered a clash of two superpowers, two favourites to win the trophy. After a crazy development, the Germans came out the better of the duel, winning 4:2.
Germany could not afford to lose as it would very likely have eliminated them from the tournament. That’s why they started strongly and took the lead in the 6th minute when Robin Gosens hit a beautiful volley. However, Serge Gnabry was offside at the centre and the goal was disallowed.
It was a very lively game of football and the Portuguese struck from a great counter. A German corner was turned away by Cristiano Ronaldo, he started the engines, sprinted across the field to the opponent’s penalty area, where the ball was passed to him by Jota and the Portugal captain sent his team into the lead.
But Germany didn’t give up and continued to press. In the 35th minute, Havertz took a centre on the run, but Rubén Dias knocked the ball into his own net in an attempt to turn the ball away.
Portugal scored a third goal in the 39th minute, but were 1:2 down. Raphael Guerreiro scored another own goal when he knocked in Kimmich’s centre into his own net. The football continued to be very attractive, but no more goals were scored before half-time.
In the second half the football was just as good, maybe even better. In the 51st minute, Gosens found Havertz with a great play, who cleared the ball into an empty net.
10 minutes later, Robin Gosens pounced on a Kimmich centre to increase the score to 4:1 and round off an excellent performance.
But the Portuguese didn’t give up. Seven minutes later, Moutinho’s centre fell through to the far post, where Cristiano Ronaldo headed it in front of goal and Diogo Jota headed it into the empty net. The score was 4-2 to Germany.
In the 79th minute, Renato Sanches took a shot from just outside the box and almost split the bar of the German goal.
Portugal then pushed for at least a reduction, but Germany stopped the optical pressure and won an extremely important 4:2 victory.
