Best day on the golf course, writes a new LIV fan. Whoever came to the Boston tournament had a full-on fun time
The big topics surrounding the disputes between the PGA Tour and LIV Golf don’t just circulate between the two organizations, but logically among fans as well. One group would prefer to wipe LIV Golf off the map, while others welcome the innovative format. Many fans only started to change their minds about the rival series after a few of their favourite players appeared on the LIV series.
In fact, the rules between the PGA and LIV are set strictly. Players who sign a contract in the Saudi Arabian venture get a bye on the PGA Tour. Regardless of whether the reigns among players will ever participate in the PGA Tour again or not. That, after all, will likely be decided by lengthy lawsuits.
The whole heated situation is, of course, dividing the fans. Most of them would like to see all the players on one Tour together again. But now they’re in a situation where they too have a choice.
The LIV Boston Invitational in early September was the perfect time for LIV Golf to introduce their growing show to die-hard PGA fans, as the American event is now taking a rest after the season’s highlight of the FedEx Cup Playoffs.
As a result, many fans made their way to The International course in Boston to see world aces such as Justin Johnson, Phil Mickelson, Cameron Smith and others in action once again after some time away. According to testimonials on various fan groups on social media, they thoroughly enjoyed the LIV Golf tournament.
“This was my first LIV event and I have been to many PGA Tour tournaments before. All I can say is WOW,” wrote Steve, 36, whose legs don’t serve him much anymore. That’s why he chooses venues where he doesn’t have to walk too much, has all the refreshments on hand, plus an ideal view of the course.
“I got tickets at their Gallery Club, where I had a view of all the players on the sixteenth hole and a full view of the three-par seventeen. Those coming from the 16th walked right past you to get to hole 17,” Steve praised the perfect view with the professional players in the palm of his hand.
However, his evaluation focused mainly on the organisational aspect of the LIV. After all, a completely unique experience is one of the things LIV Golf wants to offer spectators.
“The hospitality room had excellent food, the outlets were full and constantly replenished throughout the day – cheeseburgers, veggie burgers, salad, a big sausage in a baguette, beef, fried and roasted chicken in sandwiches, a table full of sweets and last but not least an open bar,” the fan praised the full food service. Other fans talked about the half-priced prices, compared to normal PGA Tour events.
He also brought his 10-year-old grandson to his first LIV event, who he said is not a die-hard golf fan. He bought him a cap and T-shirt with the LIV Golf logo at the Fan Village at the entrance to the facilities for his enjoyment. Beyond that, though, he enjoyed the fact that there was much more to see at The International than just play on the course.
There was also an accompanying programme for children, including an attractive mini-golf course. A little further on, the strains of live bands blared from the speakers, so there really was something for everyone.
A LOUD YOUNGER AUDIENCE
The LIV Golf organisation has previously stated that their aim is to attract more fans to golf, which was also confirmed in an interview by Phil Mickelson, who was the face of the new project in the early days.
“The fans were something that surprised even me. Thousands of young people, wives with children. It’s something incredible at a golf tournament. It’s just a guess, but the average age was probably between 20 and 35. Plus they were very vocal about the event,” Steve continued to recount.
Many fans also appreciated the very close contact with the players on the course. This too, according to Steve, is a major difference between the PGA and the LIV.
“I’ve never seen these players so interactive with the fans. From where I sat between the 16th and 17th holes, there were no ropes in their way and they were banging their fists, yelling and praising the fans. Often they stopped to greet babies and children. There were a lot of them,” a fan in one Facebook group praised something he hadn’t seen before at any other tournament in many years.
The whole atmosphere had a very energetic effect on him. He has never encountered such a golf format before and is convinced that it takes world golf to the next level. Of course, he didn’t miss the amazing performance of the players themselves on the course, which had to be decided by a play-off involving three players.
“I’ve been to at least a dozen tournaments in the last couple of years and I’ve never been asked by the PGA what I thought of a tournament. I talked to at least three people from the LIV board yesterday in the Fan Village and at the Gallery Club, and they asked me about my experience and my grandson’s experience. They asked how they could improve the experience, what we liked about it, etc. They made you feel like you were part of them,” he praised.
He definitely plans to attend some of the other LIV Golf tournaments in the future. Even with the new system of all players being on the course at the same time, he says the game remains open on all fronts until the last minute:: “The dollars I set aside for golf events will definitely be spent on LIV events before the PGA tournament if I have to choose,” concluded the happy fan.
