Bernardo Silva has revealed that he is desperate to return to Benfica but cannot move until his contract at Manchester City expires. That expires in 2026 and then he will become a free agent.

Silva has expressed his

Bernardo Silva has spoken of his desire to return to Portugal but admits he cannot do so until his contract at City expires. The reason is simple, he would be unaffordable for Benfica at the moment.

The Portuguese club’s record transfer fee is €44m (£38m) for Enzo Fernandez. And the offensive midfielder knows he would cost more. Moreover, Silva is getting on in years and Enzo was bought as the future of the team.

What did Bernardo Silva say?

Asked about returning to Benfica from A Bola as rumours continue to swirl, Silva gave a detailed answer. Now we’ll see in time what’s possible and it’s not worth talking about it all the time because people are getting tired of it… We’ll see.”

Silva also admits he is “tired” of answering the question, adding. you have to live with the reality that Portuguese football cannot compete on a financial level with English, Spanish or even German and French clubs, so…

For example, even if I wanted to go to Benfica, it would be absolutely impossible because Manchester City want a lot of money for me. In the last four or five years, I’ve been a player whose value has topped €50 million. And it’s impossible for a Portuguese club to pay that amount. People have to be a bit realistic.”

Silva’s personal relationship with Benfica

Silva started his career at Benfica when he joined their academy in 2002, aged eight. However, he played only three senior matches. In 2014, he went on loan to Monaco before the transfer became permanent. He then moved to City in 2017 and has since played 328 games for City.

Contract until 2026

Bernard’s contract expires in 2026. So he will be at City for some time to come , as he seems to be fully aware of his own value and importance to the team. We’ll see if Benfica will try to sign him before his contract expires, but given the Portuguese international’s reasoning, it seems unlikely.
