The winner of the Spanish La Liga is practically decided six rounds before the end of the season. However, after a great start to the season, the scorers’ table is shaking for the Pichichi king under Robert Lewandowski. Karim Benzema scored another hat-trick and is closing in uncomfortably on the Polish forward.
The La Liga winner is probably decided as the battle for the king of goalscorers reaches its climax
Real Madrid welcomed Almería, fighting for salvation in Spain’s top football competition, to the Santiago Bernabéu stadium in the 32nd round of La Liga. Carlo Ancelotti’s team were eleven points behind rivals Barcelona ahead of the home game in the chase for the Spanish throne.
With just six games left in the league season, Los Blancos are already virtually out of the title race, having been unable to take advantage of the Catalan big club’s less than dazzling form themselves. While the winner of the league title seems to be decided, the Pichichi trophy for the top scorer in the Spanish La Liga is still open.
After Robert Lewandowski’s pre-season move to Barcelona, most fans have been waiting for his comparison to Karim Benzema shining in a Real Madrid jersey.
While the Polish number nine entered the season in style, Benzema has downright struggled after a dream season in which he won the Ballon d’Or.
The French cannonballer was plagued by numerous injuries, culminating in his non-participation in the World Cup in Qatar. However, he now seems to be back in the form of last season, which is a key fact for Real Madrid ahead of cup battles on the European and domestic stage.
Benzema scores his third hat-trick in a month and is breathing down Lewandowski’s neck
He scored three goals in just 42 minutes against Almeria to confirm his return to elite form. First, he twice took advantage of great individual actions by Brazilians Vinícius and Rodrygo. Then, three minutes before the end of the first half, he converted a penalty kick to complete his hat-trick.
He contributed significantly to his team’s 4:2 victory and scored his third hat-trick this month.
It was his seventeenth goal in twenty games in La Liga. He is now only two goals behind Poland’s Lewandowski.
The Polish striker hit the net for Betis Sevilla in their 4-0 home win over Barcelona and leads the La Liga scorers’ table with nineteen goals. Six rounds before the end of the competition, the fight for the Pichichi trophy is still open.
