Karim Benzema finally broke the shooting impotence in the millionaire Champions League and with two goals he executed Liverpool’s chances of advancing to the next stage.

Benzema last scored in the LM last May

It looked like a blinder for last year’s Champions League winner, but in the end it was an embarrassment for home side Liverpool. The Real Madrid players showed the rock-solid mind of the champions and demolished the home team with five goals in a 0-2 draw.

Although one of the stars of the match was the agile Vinícius, who showed his extravagance once again, White Ballet coach Carlo Ancelotti was surely wringing his hands over Karim Benzema’s return to the line-up.

The latter has so far this season not followed up on a highly successful season last year, which even caused him to win the Ballon d’Or. Before the game, the statistic that caught the eye was that Benzema last scored in the Champions League at the beginning of May last year.

Back then, Real Madrid turned around an unfavourable result in a match against Manchester City. By then, the Spanish big club already had one foot out of the competition. However, his team performed one of the memorable turnarounds and Real’s number nine sent his team to the final of the competition just against Liverpool from a penalty kick.

He woke up when his team needed it most

On Tuesday night, there was a rematch of last year’s final, when the two teams had already met in the competition’s eighth-final. Many experts, however, doubted the form of the French striker. He has been struggling with many injuries this season, which also caused him to miss the World Cup in Qatar.

However, Benzema silenced all the doubters with an assist and two goals at a time when his team needed it the most. His second goal in particular was a real treat.

“It was a historic win at Liverpool and we want to dedicate the victory to the late Amancio,” the Ballon d’Or winner paid tribute to the late club legend immediately after the match. “We believe we can win this competition again.”

With his two goals, the Real Madrid striker became the first player in history to score in the LM in nineteen consecutive seasons (2005-2023). He scored more goals for Liverpool than any other player in the competition.

Karim Benzema is thus back and his Real Madrid star is once again charming. Let’s just hope his health holds firm as the season progresses and we can enjoy his amazing footballing skills.
