Benzema broke several records with his hat-trick
When Kylian Mbappé blasted into Thibaut Courtois’s net with six minutes left in the first half on Wednesday night, just as he had done three weeks ago, perhaps only die-hard Real Madrid fans believed in the coveted progression to the next round of the millionaire Champions League.
But then the ageless Karim Benzema emerged as the Knight of Blanque and sent his side through to the quarter-finals with three goals. It was a special night for the 34-year-old cannonballer not only because he helped his club advance, but he broke several records with his goals.
The Frenchman is the third top scorer in Real Madrid history
As we informed you at the beginning of the week, the French international was two goals behind until recently the greatest legend of the Royal Club, Argentine Alfredo Di Stéfano, at the weekend. In a single evening, he surpassed by one goal his legendary predecessor, who ranked third in Real Madrid’s goals scored with 308 accurate shots, to join the elite of star strikers in the history of the most successful club of the 20th century.
He also surpassed Spanish icon Raúl in Champions League goals
Ahead of Benzema is now an unreachable benchmark in Cristiano Ronaldo with 451 goals, and in second place is Santiago Bernabéu darling Raúl González, who has 14 goals ahead of the Frenchman. He is rather unlikely to overtake Raúl by the end of this season, although it is difficult to predict with certainty with a player of this calibre. But Benzema has already overtaken him in Champions League goals for Real Madrid this season (the Frenchman has one more than Raúl with 67). He has already scored eight times in this year’s LM and occupies the fourth position in the competition’s history with a total of 79 shots.
Benzema became the oldest ever Champions League hat-trick scorer
He also became the oldest hat-trick scorer in Champions League history. At the age of 34 years and 80 days, he took the record from the previous holder Olivier Giroud. He scored three goals for Sevilla while still in a Chelsea jersey, but he was seventeen days younger.
Santiago Bernabéu and the world were waiting for the performance of the rising star of world football Kylian Mbappé, but his older colleague from the French national team showed that he is definitely not an old man yet. He has already managed to score 30 goals this year and is just two goals short of equalling his personal best from the 2011/2012 championship season.
