There was huge interest in him. He has already made exactly 200 starts in professional football at the age of 19. He’s so good that Birmingham scrapped his number after one season and he wore the captain’s armband at Dortmund last season.
In addition to his great football and physical skills, Bellingham is also a leader and a natural leader. And that’s exactly the kind of player Real Madrid are looking for.
Bellingham has had his pick of the litter, with all the big clubs in the world interested in him. With Liverpool, Manchester City and Real Madrid in the final trio, the young Englishman could have opted for a more comfortable return home to the Premier League, but Jude chose otherwise.
“Everyone in England wanted me to come home. But I wanted to step out of my comfort zone. Going back to England would have been easy, but I had to take this opportunity to come here. It’s the right move and I’m where I want to be,” Bellingham explained at a press conference.
Bellingham even took a pay cut just to play at Real Madrid, as the Citizens offered him more money. But the young midfielder is not interested in that.
“Money is not an issue for me. When I make decisions like this, I never think about money and I never will. I play this game for the pure love of football. Real Madrid is the biggest club in the world and I dreamed of playing here one day,” Bellingham said.
And Real Madrid’s interest? “It was a bit of a surprise when my dad told me about Real’s interest some 12-15 months ago. I got goosebumps and my heart stopped for a while,” the England international enthused. And what did Real do to win him over?
“I was convinced when Real Madrid representatives came to my house to meet us. They treated my family very well, they didn’t try to manipulate them or anything like that. From that meeting I was determined,” Bellingham reveals behind the scenes of the transfer.
