Belgian GP: Ferrari to make a comeback, F2 and F3 to race
The summer break has come to an end and the queen of motorsport is back in action again. The famous Spa-Francorchamps circuit will be the venue for the Formula One tripleheader, three races in three weekends. There are still nine grand prix races to go before the end of the season and the closest ones could give a big hint in the battle for the world championship.
The summer break has come to an end and the queen of motorsport is back in action again. The famous Spa-Francorchamps circuit will be the venue for the Formula One Triple Crown, three races in three weekends. There are still nine grand prix races to go before the end of the season and the closest ones could give a big clue in the battle for the world championship.
Max Verstappen sits at the head of the championship with a comfortable 80-point lead over second-placed Charles Leclerc, and many fans already consider the fight for the championship trophy to be decided. But Ferrari will still try to come back and fight for their first title since 2007.
Ferrari could be the favourite in Belgium, having matched Red Bull’s top speed and can take advantage of some slow corners where the Scuderia is one of the strongest teams. But the question will be how Ferrari will handle the tactics and how Leclerc and Sainz’s engine will hold up.
It is reliability and strategy that are the main obstacles for the Maranello team in its quest for triumph. And unless something fundamentally changes, Max Verstappen really can rejoice much sooner than the last lap of the Abu Dhabi race.
As last year, rain could have a say in the race. But this time, the fans are hoping for a race. A year ago there were two “race” laps under the Safety Car, which made George Russell’s first podium appearance as a Williams driver.
Defending champion from last year is Max Verstappen. Let’s hope there’s some great formulaic drama on 44 laps this year. And that we see some drama in the championship fight. But Formula One won’t be the only activity of the weekend at the Belgian circuit.
Both junior categories, Formula 2 and Formula 3, will also feature at Spa. In the youngest category, the eyes of the Czech spectators will certainly be on Roman Stanek, for whom the next three weeks could be a fight for life and death in motorsport.
In F2, Théo Pourchaire and Felipe Drugovich’s battle for the championship title will be the highlight. Another of the category’s drivers, Liam Lawson, will then take to the cockpit of the Alpha Tauri on Friday afternoon as part of the mandatory F1 rookie practice sessions.
A weekend full of formulae on Friday with Formula 3 practice at 10am and 25 minutes. During Saturday and Sunday we can look forward to five races, two F2 and F3 sprints and the main races in all three categories. The start of the 2022 Belgian F1 Grand Prix is scheduled for 3pm on Sunday.
