Before the EURA game, the referee was the only one on the field to take a knee. Isn’t it time to end this ritual?
A rather curious situation was experienced by the fans before the European Championship match between Scotland and Croatia. As is customary, the referee instructed the players to kneel before the match, but they left him alone.
A rather curious situation was experienced by the fans before the European Championship match between Scotland and Croatia. As is customary, the referee instructed the players to kneel before the match, but they left him alone.
Everything looked normal. As Scotland and Croatia were about to play their last group match at the European Championships, referee Fernando Andres Rapallini blew his whistle in support of the fight against racism and knelt down himself.
But neither player followed suit in this gesture. This created a rather humorous situation on the pitch, where the only one who knelt was the referee himself. As soon as the referee Rapallini found out, he stood up and started the match.
So we can ask, isn’t it time to put an end to this ritual? There is already a rather strong resentment among the players against this gesture, not to mention the fact that such displays of political gestures should have no place in sport.
The Czech national team is also among the opponents of kneeling. The Czech national team has already announced before the championship that it will not kneel before the match and will express its support for the fight against racism in a more appropriate way.
Perhaps even a humorous situation like this will help the ritual to disappear and racism will actually be fought. Especially elsewhere than on football pitches, where politics should not be allowed to go.
