Beer Sheva 2. Nothing could have happened to Slavia, but it did. Will there be another comeback?

Slavia faced Ferencváros in the third round of the Champions League, but the result was the opposite of what the Sešiovans had hoped for. One can find one parallel with last year’s Europa League match, which had a similar course.

You may remember the first round of the Europa League last season. Slavia conquered their opponents on the ground of Beer Sheva, they were clearly the better team and it seemed that nothing could happen to them. It was all about when and how many goals they scored.

But no. A miscommunication between Ondrej Kolar and David Hovorka resulted in the home team’s first goal just before half-time. When Lukáš Provod equalised 15 minutes before the end, everything pointed to Slavia taking all three points. However, a collapse came and in the 86th and 88th two goals by Acolatse decided the game.

The duel with Ferencváros followed a similar course. The Red and Whites came at their opponent at a high tempo, creating several chances, while Ferencváros was almost harmless except for one opportunity. Once again, Slavia seemed to have the match firmly in their hands and nothing could happen to them. That scoring a goal was only a matter of time.

But a miss by Kolar and a dribble sent the home team into the lead, from which Slavia never recovered. Moreover, shortly after the break, Kacharaba fouled unnecessarily in the whitewash and gave the home team a penalty.

Ferencváros may not have known how they got their goals, but they won the game 2: 0. The positive thing about this story is that Slavia turned things around in the first instance. Jindřich Trpišovský knows how to learn from mistakes, which he proved against Beer Sheva. Slavia swept the Israeli opponent in Eden 3:0, the difference could have been bigger.

Sešiovans were definitely not a worse team than Ferencváros. They didn’t even outplay their opponent, but the 0:2 result is very cruel. However, it is definitely within the power of the Slavs to score 2 goals. All the more so when the rule about goals on the opponent’s pitches was abolished, which gives Slavia an advantage for the rematch.

In case of a goal, Slavia can score another one and if the score is 3:1, it would go to extra time. A year ago, Susians would have been eliminated with such a result.
