Real Madrid and the wonderful goals at the Santiago Bernabéu in the Champions League, they kind of go together. Los Blancos players added one more such goal on Wednesday against Shakhtar Donetsk.

Football is sometimes paradoxical. Real Madrid put in one of their best performances of the season in the first half, had plenty of chances, took 18 shots and yet the score was only 2-1 at halftime. No one could be surprised if it went to the booths at 6:0.

Shakhtar weren’t afraid to play fair with the defending Champions League champions, playing from the penalty spot and pressuring their opponents all over the pitch as if it were a foul. But logically, this brought mistakes and also outnumbering, so Real had three chances in the first half.

Rodrygo got the first breakthrough in the 13th minute when he took advantage of a rebound from an opponent and cleared the ball to the bar with a shot from outside the box. In the 28th minute it was 2-0, this time Real set up a luxury goal for the fans.

However, in the 39th minute Zubkov reduced the score to 2:1. In the second half, the festival of chances from the home team continued, but the visitors couldn’t find an equaliser.

Real are comfortably first in the table with full points (9). Second Shakhtar have 4 points, Leipzig 3 and Celtic 1. The rematch between Real and Shakhtar is scheduled for next week.
