Manchester City beat Bayern 3-0 at home in the Champions League quarter-finals. In an evenly matched battle, the visitors ran out of steam after an hour of play, giving the Citizens a big cushion going into the rematch.
Alphonso Davies had the first attempt of the match from the edge of the box, but he missed the target. Manchester City had more of the touches, like in the 15th minute when Erling Haaland almost scored through a cross after a duel with Yann Sommer.
In the 22nd minute, the Norwegian sniper was already firing, but he sent a very weak and poorly placed projectile by his standards. Three minutes later, Jamal Musiala fired on the other side, but Ruben Dias made an excellent block.
And in the 27th minute, it was the young German’s undoing as Rodri opened the scoring with a shot from outside the box. Seven minutes later, Sommer saved the day when he headed out Ilkay Gundogan’s goal attempt with his foot.
Leroy Sane’s attempt, which flew just wide of the far post, closed the first half. After the change of sides, Bayern survived a couple of barrages, the closest they came to scoring was Haaland, whose shot was blocked by the Munich defence.
The game was played up and down, a precise shot by Sane from outside the box was parried by Ederson, while at the other end Dias was reflexively saved by Sommer. After that, the pace dropped slightly, only to pick up again in the 70th minute with the home side’s second goal.
Erling Haaland found Bernardo Silva after a mistake by Dayot Upamecan, who already had an easy job. And six minutes later it was done. Citizens finished a corner kick superbly and Haaland was no longer wrong himself in front of Sommer.
In the end, Bayern still stood a few promising chances, but will still go into the home rematch three goals down.
