Barcelona’s comet is facing a benchmark that hasn’t been surpassed yet this season

If Pedri plays for Spain in the final game at the Tokyo Olympics, he will be playing his 73rd game in the still unfinished 2020/21 season.

That’s an incredible amount of games considering the Spanish midfielder only joined Barcelona last year. The Catalan outfit had already secured the services of the Las Palmas offspring in September 2019, when they bought Pedri for €20 million, but kept him at the club on loan for another year.

It’s an incredible rise for the 18-year-old super talent, and in such a short period of time. However, it must be added that the 174 cm tall midfielder undoubtedly deserves it for his performances.

In the spring, there was a lot of talk about whether Pedri was similar to Xavi or Iniesta. In the end, however, the vast majority agreed that the mainstay of the Spanish national team at the Tokyo Olympics has something of both Barcelona legends.

However, his greatest strengths are his great footwork, stability and vision. Every football fan has marvelled at the often surprising passes he has sent his teammates into chances all season. And that’s just the beginning!

Barcelona’s recent season hasn’t been rosy, but when you take into account the fact that you have the duo of Pedri – Frenkie de Jong in midfield, there’s certainly nothing to worry about.

Pedri himself has only missed a single game in the last La Liga season, scoring 3 goals and 3 assists. Moreover, he has only been issued two yellow cards during that time, so even that says something about his exceptionalism.

With Spain, he then reached the semi-finals of the Euros, where they lost to the Italians on penalties and Pedri missed only one minute, when he let Rodri on the pitch in the 119th minute of the match against Switzerland.

Even now at the Olympics, he is an indispensable player for the Spanish squad that has made it to the final where they will face a strong Brazil. This particular duel will be the 73rd match for Pedri, who will thus enter the record tables for the 2020/21 season.

After that, he will hopefully have a longed-for holiday where he will need a breather to avoid any unnecessary injuries. The Spanish genius is on a great run!
