When Barcelona partnered with Spotify in the summer, it brought a lot of money into the club’s coffers. However, it also came with a commitment that Barcelona would wear artists’ logos on the jersey instead of the sponsor’s in some matches.
And now it has come for the first time. In Sunday’s El Clásico, Spotify wants to recognise Canadian rapper Drake, who was the first to reach 50 billion plays of his songs on Spotify.
“For the first time in our history, we’re replacing our main partner’s name on the front of the jersey with an internationally recognized artist in Drake, winner of 4 Grammys and a record breaker in various categories, such as being the first artist to accumulate 50 billion plays on Spotify. This initiative shows our potential to become a unique platform offering experiences that will help us get closer to our fans while reaching new audiences around the world,” said Juli Guiu, Barcelona’s vice president of marketing, on the club’s official website.
“Barcelona will wear the jersey with my logo until Sunday’s El Clásico. It doesn’t sound real, but it is,” Drake announced excitedly on his Instagram.
