Barcelona, unlike Bayern, successful on the last day of the transfer window
Both Barcelona and Bayern made last minute efforts to complete the transfers of two players on the last day of the transfer window. The Bavarian big club was in talks with England’s Fulham and Southampton for players, while the Catalans were looking for reinforcements at rivals Atlético Madrid and Manchester City.
However, it was only successful for one.
Bayern Munich confirmed the departure of Ryan Gravenberch to Liverpool on Wednesday. The English giant paid 40 million euros for him, but the transfer meant a reduction in the width of the midfield. The solution was to be Portuguese midfielder Palhinha from Fulham.
The 28-year-old Portuguese arrived at Fulham a year ago from Sporting Lisbon. In one season he has worked his way to the top of the Premier League in terms of players in his position. Big clubs started circling around him, but no offers came for a long time, which Bayern did a few days before the end of the transfer window.
Palhinha had already passed two medical examinations in Munich and everything seemed to be done. Fulham, however, wanted to find a replacement, scouting Scott McTominay, but time was against them and they couldn’t agree a sum with United, which meant Palhinha stayed in England.
The German big club also wanted to bring the transfer of Armen Bell-Kothchap from Southampton to a successful conclusion, but the English club was against it, and eventually PSV Eidhoven, where the German player headed on a one-year loan.
The pair of players Barcelona were interested in will surprise no one. They were Joao Cancelo and Joao Félix. The Catalans (supposedly) had been in talks with Manchester City for some time regarding the Portuguese winger.
The only thing that was pending was the release of funds, due to LaLiga’s financial fair play. Fabrizio Romano finally announced shortly before midnight that the hosting deal had indeed been finalised and Cancelo would be able to be registered.
Cancelo was a guest at Bayern in the spring, where he did not impress enough with his performances for the club to pay Manchester City the required amount for him. However, even after returning to the Citizens, Cancelo did not perform as expected and it was clear that he would have to leave. At first it looked like he would be a guest at Barcelona with a possible transfer option, but in the end the terms did not include an option.
After returning to Diego Simeone’s team, Joao Félix declared to the media that it is his dream to play for Barcelona. So he was automatically sent out of the squad. What prevented his move to the Camp Nou? If you think it was financial fair play, you are very right to think so.
Barcelona did everything to make the player’s transfer possible. Fati, Eric Garcia, Lenglet went on loan, Abde was sold. In the end, the savings were tallied and Félix was able to join the team on a one year loan without a transfer option.
