Barcelona need to clean up their squad. Depay’s return to Manchester United is on the cards
Memphis Depay, once a great talent in Dutch football, is trying his best to settle in a top club, and unfortunately for him, he is not getting the chance. At least not to the point where he is starting regularly. However, there are interesting alternatives on offer as Manchester United have started to take an interest in him, in addition to Juventus.
Today, 34 million euros already seems like a relatively low amount to pay for an ‘average’ player from the Eredivisie. But in 2015, it was a big investment for Manchester United, which unfortunately didn’t work out and in one and a half seasons, Depay has already moved to Lyon for 16 million euros.
There he started to thrive again, scoring 76 goals in 178 games and assisting another 56. This was noticed in the summer of 2021 by a desperate Barcelona, specifically Ronald Koeman, who lured his compatriot to the Camp Nou.
While we certainly can’t judge Depay’s performance in Catalonia as bad, having scored 13 goals in 37 games, he is not a player with the DNA of this specific club, something he quickly learned after Xavi’s arrival.
Moreover, the massive investment in new reinforcements has put Depay in a position where he will hardly see the pitch. His departure is almost a certainty, and the only question is where the Dutch winger with the excellent shot will go next.
So far, Juventus have been the biggest suitors, however, Spanish daily Marca has come up with the news that the currently 28-year-old striker could move back to Old Trafford.
Manchester United would like to increase the quality in the attack, so Depay would be a great addition to the rotation, and a very cheap one at a rumored €10 million.
At the same time, the Red Devils are working on the arrival of Antony, but he is very expensive as it is still unclear whether the Manchester club will meet Ajax’s conditions. In case of failure, Cody Gakpo, another Dutchman who would come to the Theatre of Dreams from PSV, should become an alternative.
