Barcelona has not been in the rosiest financial situation for a long time, which makes it difficult to register new players and new contracts. Gavi’s new contract has added to other such problems.

La Liga rejected Barcelona’s request to register Gavi as a first-team player after sending him a new, improved contract. The 18-year-old midfielder had already agreed to a new contract some time ago, which also includes a €1 billion exit clause.

Barcelona filled out the necessary paperwork on Wednesday, hoping to register Gavi before the end of the transfer window. He is currently listed as a youth footballer

La Liga rejected the request because the Catalan club does not have the financial space to carry out the registration in question. The rejection was made according to the rules of financial fair play, where no new contract registrations are allowed during the season provided the club exceeds the salary cap for the upcoming season.

Barcelona had hoped that the departures of Pique and Depay would allow some room for manoeuvre. La Liga management, however, has been relentless towards Barcelona.

At the moment, defender Ronald Araujo is also waiting to sign a new contract. However, both players are calm because they believe that the club will resolve the situation soon.

Another sale of TV rights?

Barcelona have already activated various financial levers in the summer, such as the sale of TV rights for the next 25 years. However, La Liga has made it clear that the period of these solutions is coming to an end. It has introduced a rule that the extra income from the sale of assets will not increase the salary cap

There is one exception to this rule. If the asset is a loss-making asset, the profit can be included in the increase in the salary cap. In that case, the management could agree to sell BarcaTV , which is losing around EUR 6 million a year.

This leaves Barcelona with few options. The biggest problem is still the wage bill, which the club would need to reduce. At the moment, roughly 660 million euros is spent on wages, but the ideal threshold for the club should be set somewhere between 450 and 500 million euros.
