Barcelona is facing a serious crisis. It is currently forced to do without eight important players in its starting line-up. Injuries have affected almost all positions, which may have a significant impact on the team’s performances in La Liga and the Champions League.
- Marc-André ter Stegen will reportedly be out until the summer of 2025 due to a serious knee injury
- Also out are key midfielders Pedri, Frenkie de Jong and Gavi
- Hansi Flick needs to come up with a strategy to ensure that the injury doesn’t affect the game too much
The biggest blow for Barcelona is the loss of goalkeeper Marc-André ter Stegen. The German goalkeeper suffered a serious knee injury during a league match against Villarreal and is expected to be out until mid-2025.
Barcelona’s defence is also significantly weakened by the loss of Ronald Araujo, who is out with a hamstring injury until January 2025. Another defender on the sidelines is Andreas Christensen, who is battling Achilles tendon irritation and is scheduled to return early next year.
However, injuries like in the case of ter Stegen and Araujo mean long-term debilitation. The goalkeeper will be unavailable for almost a year, which will require not only a replacement between the three sticks, but also a possible change in tactics. Araújo’s absence will hit the defence especially in aerial duels and against strong opponents.
Barcelona’s midfield is also weakened due to injuries to three key players – Pedri, Frenkie de Jong and Gavi. Pedri suffered a muscle injury that will keep him out of action until at least October.
De Jong, who injured his ankle, is expected to return at the same time. Gavi is out with a serious knee ligament injury and is expected to miss the rest of the fall.
Also absent on offense, a challenge for Flick
The offensive part of the lineup is missing Dani Olmo, one of the team’s most creative players, who is out with a muscle injury and is expected to return in October. In addition to him, Fermin Lopez, a talented young midfielder who is also nursing a muscle injury, is also out and reportedly won’t be back for a few weeks.
Hansi Flick, who has only recently taken charge of the team, must now face a big challenge. The absence of eight players from the starting line-up tests the depth of the squad and his ability to rotate players in different positions. In addition, Barcelona will face tough matches in the Champions League, where every point can decide promotion.
Due to numerous injuries, coach Flick will have to rely on young talents who don’t have as much experience on the pitch. Another option is the more frequent involvement of less busy players, who should help keep the team in the top tiers of the table.
