Yannick Ferreira Carrasco could become a Barcelona player in the summer. The Catalan club has negotiated a preliminary agreement with Atlético Madrid to buy the Belgian player, who will remain in Madrid for at least the spring.
Barcelona initially wanted to include Carrasco in the transfer with Memphis Depay, but Atlético did not agree to that. The Dutch striker arrives at the Civítas Metropolitano for €3 million and has signed a contract until 2025.
However, Carrasco’s possible departure to Barcelona has nothing to do with it. The 29-year-old Belgian has a contract at Atlético until June 2024 and if he decides not to extend his contract, he has another option.
According to the MARCA newspaper, he has decided to sign a preliminary agreement with Barcelona, who can buy him out for €20 million in the summer. Carrasco has also made it clear that he does not want to weaken Simeone’s roster now in January.
If a summer transfer were to happen, Carrasco would only have a year left on his contract. That’s why the Metropolitano sees €20 million for the 30-year-old as a decent business deal this year.
However, this option is of course not obligatory, so if Barcelona decide to swoop for other transfers instead of Carrasco, they are under no obligation to buy out the Belgian winger.
Carrasco is twisting his seventh season at Atlético Madrid, having meanwhile bounced to China for two years (2018-19), where he played for Dalian Pro.
Previously he was much more productive, for example in the 2021-21 season he racked up a 7+11 record. This season he has just one goal in 15 league games, scoring once in the Champions League and adding two assists. He has also changed his position, often playing as a half-back in a 3-5-2 formation.
